Glutathione (GSH) is a synthetic 3-amino acid tripeptide (γ-Glutamyl-Cysteinyl-Glycine), the body’s primary endogenous antioxidant.
It was first discovered in 1888 by French researcher J. de Rey-Pailhade. Subsequent structural elucidation and synthesis work was advanced by scientists including Frederick Gowland Hopkins in the early 20th century. No single commercial company founded the native peptide; it originated from academic biochemical research.
Researchers have investigated Glutathione in preclinical and clinical models for its potent antioxidant properties, detoxification support (particularly in the liver), cellular protection against oxidative stress, and immune modulation.
Areas of study have included liver health models, neurodegenerative conditions, skin pigmentation research, chemotherapy adjunct support, and general oxidative stress-related pathways.
