MOTS-c is a synthetic 16-amino acid mitochondrial-derived peptide (MRWQEMGYIFYPRKLR) encoded by the 12S rRNA region of the mitochondrial genome.
It was discovered in 2015 by Dr. Changhan Lee and Prof. Pinchas Cohen’s research team at the University of Southern California (USC) Davis School of Gerontology.Researchers have investigated MOTS-c in preclinical models for its role in regulating metabolic homeostasis.
Primary areas of study include improving insulin sensitivity, enhancing glucose uptake and utilization in skeletal muscle, promoting fat metabolism and energy expenditure, reducing obesity, supporting exercise mimetic effects, and exploring potential benefits in age-related metabolic decline, diabetes models, and mitochondrial function.
